The 16th Forum for Germanic Language Studies conference will be hosted by the University of Cambridge, meeting at Newnham College. This will be a fully in-person event.
Papers
We invite submission of abstracts for papers on any linguistic aspects of (or metalinguistic perspectives on) any Germanic language or variety, including English (to the Early Modern period) and the extraterritorial varieties. Papers from any area of linguistics ranging from formal linguistics to sociolinguistics are welcome. Talks should be 20 minutes long to allow time for discussion. Conference languages are English and German. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words in length and will be peer-reviewed by the conference programme organisers.
Alongside the general programme the conference will feature two panels:

Contributions are welcome on multilingualism addressing issues including migration, language planning, policy and politics of language. Prof Ernest Hess-Lüttich (TU Berlin) has accepted the invitation to be lead speaker at this panel. For questions on this panel (but not submissions, see below), please email Dr Sharma aks71@cam.ac.uk.Linguistics in teaching Germanic languages, organised by Anna Havinga (University of Bristol) and Sascha Stollhans (University of Leeds);
This panel seeks contributions on using linguistics for teaching Germanic languages and on how knowledge about language can support teachers and learners of these languages. For questions on this panel (but not submissions, see below), please email Anna.Havinga@bristol.ac.uk.
All abstracts should be submitted by 15 December 2023 to Sheila Watts «sw271@cam.ac.uk». The subject of the email should be «SURNAME Abstract FGLS 2024». If you propose a paper for one of the two panels, please state this clearly in your email.
